The Book Fair is now over and it was a stunning success! This is all thanks to the parent volunteers and the parents who supported both the library and their favorite teachers through their purchases. It was a wonderful opportunity for me to visit with the parents and share with them the books I am excited about. The community at Ensign is so supportive of the library and literacy that it is a privilege to be here each day.
A special Thank You to the volunteers......
Below I have pictured just some of the books that the Ensign library was able to add to its collection from the Book Fair. The proceeds of the Fall Book Fair essentially enabled us to double our book budget. I can't wait to get these in the students hands!
But how to decide what spooky story is just right for you?
This is extra tricky in an elementary school library. What's right for a sixth grader is not even close to the right level of scary for a first grader. I think I have finally figured some things out.
I made a display of picture books for Kindergarten and First Grade.
Next, on the opposite side of the library, I made a display that sections the books off by grade and higher, so that students know exactly what books they are allowed to choose from.
What and where is advertising?
This year 3-4th graders have just started learning about what Advertising is and how to recognize it. Learning about this is important since Media is a big part of our Library Media Center curriculum and our whole planet is saturated with advertising, much of it geared towards youth (and their magical pester power!).
We have been focusing on Online advertising with its pop-ups ads, video ads, banner ads, and advergames. We even played a fun advergame that was created for lunchables. We worried that the mixed up animals we were creating were what the lunchable meat was made of. Haha! Students are now using the animal they created as part of a 'lost animal' poster, where we are learning how to appeal to people's emotions in our semi-advertisement. (Also learning Microsoft Word Skills at the same time!!).
Next up is more detailed learning on how advertising is directed at them and how they use emotion, color, and fun to target them. We will also try to figure out who different ads are targeting and if they are using fact or opinion to sell their product.
